5th Grade GT Math
Fifth grade G/T Math students engaged in Common Core Standards instruction all year. They have worked through meaningful and rigorous mathematical tasks, learning real world content in order to extract and apply advanced mathematical concepts and skills. It has been an exciting and rewarding mathematical year!
Scale - Scale drawings are one way to reinforce ratio and proportion. We were so lucky to have Mrs. Simon come teach us how to use Excel to create scale drawings of our bedrooms!
Unit Rate - To better understand the meaning behind finding a unit rate, students used grocery store flyers and broke down the prices of common items in order to compare per ounce, per pound, or per item. It was a real eye opener!
Metacognition - This school year, a main goal for these students was to understand the phases of metacognition in order to better express their problem-solving processes in writing. Rigorous Problems-of-the-Week were first tackled, and then the phases of metacognition were put into action when self-thinking started...and pencil hit the paper!
P.O.W. Wow Wizard - Who doesn't need a good celebration??? In honor of the efforts put into written problem-solving explanations, students engaged in regular Pow-Wows to celebrate strengths in mathematical writing and to highlight goals met.
A Parody - When the opportunity for creativity strikes, we capitalize on it! A parody about subtracting integers??? Why not?
